Thank you, Technical Theatre!
Today is the last day of Technical Theatre. Never in a million lifetimes would I have imagined that I’d be saying that from my house. We should have been unloading the last truck of the year today! (ComPAny 2020’s last performance was supposed to be last night at The Art Place)
But here we are.
As I was putting together last Friday’s PA Awards Night video, it dawned on me that I’d be the only person creating a spring show this year. I’ve never done a show at Pebblebrook without the immense help and hard work of my students.
As I put some of your names on the screen, I also couldn’t help but think about all of the names that weren’t mentioned. Each and every one of you have my deepest respect and admiration for all of the hard work you’ve put in this year. I say this often, but it’s worth repeating - We don’t do this for applause. The entertainment design & production industry is a thankless world, but it doesn’t have to be.
Beginning Tech - Your energy was hard to tame at times this year, but your enthusiasm and eagerness to learn about this craft keeps me hopeful for the future of technical theatre.
Intermediate Tech - You are the backbone of this department. You guys came everyday ready to work, ready to get stuff done, and were always looking to improve. I was looking forward so much to see you guys take on some more expanded roles and increased responsibility as we finished out the semester. You’ll get that chance next year. I’ll be giving many of you the keys next year!
Advanced Tech - Your leadership and dedication is what everyone looks up to. Thanks for keeping my hight standards and expectations.
To those of you who are moving on from Technical Theatre next year, I want to thank you for giving this a shot. So many people come to me their senior year and say “I wish I had a chance to take tech”. None of you will have that regret! I hope you’ll take some of what you’ve learned with you. For everyone returning, Thanks. This is not an easy ride, but it’s definitely fulfilling. I can’t wait to see the passion and dedication you put in next year. And that’s what I’ll expect from each of you to make it work. If you’re returning, you’re telling everyone else that you’re ready to give everything you have to the work. I promise I’ll do everything I can to make sure it’s worth it!
I have no idea what we’ll return to in the fall. Some things will look differently, that’s for sure. I’m already starting to plan for that. We’re going to learn about parts of the industry that we’ve only glanced at in the past. You will experience technical theatre in new ways, but the rigor and expectations won’t be lowered. Next year will be intense but rewarding. I hope you’re up for the challenge!
Have a great summer. Unplug. Rest. Read. Imaging. Create.
I can’t wait to welcome you all back.
